On April 7, 2023, Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, was detained and questioned for several hours by immigration officials at London’s Heathrow Airport. This was revealed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Head of Obi-Datti Media Office, Diran Onifade, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
According to the statement, Obi was detained due to alleged duplication offences committed by an impostor who is still at large. The statement suggested that this impostor may have committed various crimes that led to Obi’s harassment. It was added that Obi had lived in the UK for over a decade.

Obi-Datti Media Office confirmed that the LP presidential candidate had just returned from celebrating Easter in London when he was harassed by immigration officials and detained. They stated that Obi was standing in the queue for the necessary airport protocols when an immigration official handed him a detention note and told him to step aside. He was questioned for a long time, which was deemed strange considering his long residency in the country.
