Lagos Police Records Over 100 Defilement Cases in Three Months

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police has reported a concerning increase in defilement cases, with a total of 111 cases recorded between April and June of this year.

According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, the rising number of defilement cases in the state is a matter of great concern. In addition to the defilement cases, 14 rape cases and 56 cases of domestic violence were also documented during the same period.

Of the reported cases, 99 suspects have been charged to court, demonstrating the command’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible for such heinous acts face the full force of the law. Currently, 83 cases are under investigation, indicating the command’s determination to prosecute instances of domestic and gender-based violence in Lagos State.

To further combat these crimes, CP Idowu Owohunwa has initiated the remodeling of the command’s Gender Unit. This move signifies his dedication to dealing decisively with culprits involved in gender-based violence. Additional officers have been trained and assigned to the unit, aimed at enhancing the investigation process for gender-based violence cases.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin urged the public to courageously speak out if they have experienced abuse or have witnessed any form of gender or sexual abuse. He reassured the public that the command is fully committed to protecting their rights and will take appropriate action to ensure justice is served.
