Gabonese military officers seize power, dissolve institutions after Bongo’s reelection

Senior Gabonese military officers took control of the nation in the early hours of Wednesday, suspending elections and closing borders following the announcement of President Ali Bongo’s third-term victory.

The officers, appearing on Gabon 24 television, asserted that they represented all security and defense forces. They declared the election results null and void, dissolved state institutions, and closed borders indefinitely.

This move follows a tense election that pitted Bongo against opposition figures amid concerns about transparency and unrest. Gunfire was reported in the capital, Libreville, after the officers’ announcement.
