Old Minimum Wage Expired May 1st – Labour, Gives FG New Ultimatum

The Nigerian Labour Congress has issued a stern ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging the completion of ongoing negotiations regarding the new minimum wage or facing potential industrial action. This ultimatum was jointly delivered by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during the Workers Day celebration in Abuja on May 1. Leaders emphasized that the previous N30,000 minimum wage expired on April 18, with the new wage expected to commence on May 1. They expressed frustration that discussions on the new wage have stalled, attributing the delay to the federal government’s failure to reconvene meetings. According to the labour leaders, despite legislation at the national assembly, the dialogue has been left in limbo, leading to growing discontent among workers.
