NUJ Urges Tinubu to Prioritize Media Safety

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Correspondents Chapel has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to unveil his administration’s plans for the safety and protection of media practitioners and workers in Nigeria.

Chairman of FCT Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, stressed the urgent need for concrete measures to address the hazardous environment facing Nigerian journalists. He commented, “The media space is shrinking, hostile, and suffocating due to the intolerant posture of some government officials towards criticisms and dissenting voices.”

Echoing this sentiment, Secretary Raphael Oni emphasized the importance of upholding press freedom, highlighting the risks journalists face daily. He said, “Journalists in Nigeria face significant risks, including harassment, intimidation, and physical attacks while carrying out their statutory duties.”

The NUJ demanded accountability from the government and security forces, urging prosecution for attacks on journalists. They reaffirmed the crucial role of journalism in democracy, stating, “Journalism is the oxygen of democracy and positive change and development of any democratic society.”

In conclusion, the NUJ reiterated its commitment to upholding press freedom and pledged to continue advocating for the protection of journalists in Nigeria.
