Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing multiple statutory and financial violations.
The lawmakers unanimously replaced Mr. Obasa with his deputy, Lasbat Meranda. Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the chief whip of the Assembly.
The impeachment followed reports by SocietyGists, which detailed how Mr. Obasa authorized the withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion for backup vehicles for legislators, along with other contentious financial dealings.
Sources confirmed that Mr. Obasa was in Atlanta at the time of his removal. Aged 52, he first assumed the role of Speaker on June 8, 2015, alongside then-Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Obasa faced repeated accusations of corruption and the use of political thugs. In 2020, SocietyGists published a series of exposés revealing his diversion of public funds to personal businesses and bank accounts.
Additionally, a top Nigerian News site published numerous properties allegedly linked to Mr. Obasa across Lagos. Although the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) summoned him in response to growing media coverage of his alleged misconduct, he denied all charges. After his interrogation, no formal case was brought against him.
