The National Working Committee of the (PDP) has congratulated its successful candidates in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections held in Abuja on February 21, 2026, describing the victories as significant despite what it termed widespread irregularities.

In a statement on Saturday, the party said although the number of wins fell short of expectations, the outcome was “particularly gladdening” given what it alleged were unprecedented levels of intimidation, high-powered money politics and executive interference during the polls. The PDP claimed that reports and video evidence showed armed security personnel allegedly carting away result sheets, intimidating voters and unduly influencing outcomes at several polling units.

The party specifically congratulated the Chairman-elect of the , Mohammed Kasim, as well as PDP councillors declared winners by the (INEC).

To address grievances arising from the exercise, the PDP announced the inauguration of a special legal team headed by its National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u, Esq. The team is mandated to handle post-election petitions for candidates with “genuine complaints,” with the party urging affected candidates to act swiftly, noting that delays are often fatal in election litigation.

The PDP also blamed the low voter turnout recorded during the polls on what it described as an “anti-people” Electoral Act 2026, arguing that public confidence in elections conducted under the law has eroded. It warned that the FCT council elections could serve as a precursor to the 2027 general elections unless urgent reforms are undertaken.

The party called on the and the President to urgently address the alleged flaws in the electoral framework, warning that failure to do so could endanger Nigeria’s democratic system.

The statement was signed by Comrade Ini Ememobong, mnipr, National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, and dated February 22, 2026.
