The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police.

The decision followed a brief but well-attended session chaired by Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, lasting less than 30 minutes before members endorsed the appointment.

The Council’s approval fulfils the statutory requirement that it considers any nomination for the office of Inspector-General made by the President. The body comprises the President as chairman, the 36 state governors, the head of the Police Service Commission, and the serving Inspector-General of Police.

Monday’s meeting followed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun last week. In announcing his departure, the Presidency had indicated that the Council would soon convene to formally review Disu’s nomination.

Among those present at the session were Kashim Shettima; George Akume; Nuhu Ribadu; and Didi Walson-Jack.

With the Council’s endorsement, Disu formally assumes leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at a time of heightened expectations around security and institutional reform.
