The has ordered the immediate suspension of commercial activities in several cattle markets across four local government areas, citing escalating security concerns linked to criminal activities.
The directive, approved by Governor , affects markets in Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi, and Tafawa Balewa local government areas.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, the government said the decision followed intelligence reports indicating that the affected markets had become hubs for criminal operations, including cattle rustling, kidnappings, killings, and the illegal exchange of weapons.
According to the statement, the markets had also become targets for criminal groups who exploit trading activities to terrorise residents and disrupt local economies, particularly food supply chains. The government described the situation as a significant threat to livelihoods and regional stability.
While the suspension is described as temporary, authorities said it would remain in force until there is a marked improvement in security conditions.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce compliance, while local government officials and traditional leaders – including emirs, district heads, and village heads – have been tasked with sensitising residents and ensuring adherence to the directive.
The move underscores growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Bauchi State and reflects broader efforts by authorities to curb criminal networks operating under the guise of legitimate commerce.
